　　Beginning just after the bloody Sioux victory over General Custer at Little Big Horn, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee intertwines the perspectives of three characters: Charles Eastman (Beach), né Ohiyesa, a young, Dartmouth-educated, Sioux doctor held up as living proof of the alleged success of assimilation; Sitting Bull (Schellenberg), the proud Lakota chief who refuses to submit to U.S. government policies designed to strip his people of their identity, their dignity and their sacred land – the gold-laden Black Hills of the Dakotas; and Senator Henry Dawes (Quinn), who was one of the architects of the government policy on Indian affairs. While Eastman and patrician schoolteacher Elaine Goodale (Paquin) work to improve life for the Indians on the reservation, Senator Dawes lobbies President Grant (Thompson) for more humane treatment, opposing the bellicose stance of General William Tecumseh Sherman (Feore). Hope rises for the Indians in the form of the prophet Wovoka (Studi) and the Ghost Dance – a messianic movement that promises an end of their suffering under the white man. This hope is obliterated after the assassination of Sitting Bull and the massacre of hundreds of Indian men, women and children by the 7th Cavalry at Wounded Knee Creek on Dec. 29, 1890. 　　辽阔的西部草原住着一位父亲和他的三个儿子——父亲是退了休的骑兵上校，三个儿子个性鲜明：大儿子艾尔弗莱德（艾丹•奎因 Aidan Quinn  饰）忠厚老实，二儿子特里斯坦（布拉德•皮特 Brad Pitt 饰）狂放不羁，最小的儿子塞缪尔（亨瑞•托马斯Henry Thomas饰）温文尔雅。　　父子在大草原的生活随着塞缪尔未婚妻苏珊娜（朱莉娅•奥蒙德 Julia Ormond  饰）的到来而改变。苏珊娜年轻漂亮，给艾尔弗莱德带来了内心的震动。他暗恋她，然而苏珊娜心里却不由自主的迷恋上豪放粗犷的特里斯坦。出于道德的坚守，他们一直压抑着内心的感情。　　直到塞缪尔壮烈牺牲在前线，事情有了变化。特里斯坦非常爱戴哥哥，无法面对已经爱上苏珊娜的现实，于是离家出走。而苏珊娜万念俱灰，答应嫁给了艾尔弗莱德，而特里斯坦在草原之外也已结婚生子。事情好像趋于了平静，但特里斯坦妻子的亡故又令事情有了波澜。

　　查尔斯（安东尼·霍普金斯 Anthony Hopkins 饰）是一个腰缠万贯的百万富翁，对于他来说，金钱、权利和女人不过是生活的基本配置而已。但是，在为查尔斯打工的摄影师罗伯特（亚历克·鲍德温 Alec Baldwin 饰）眼里，老板所拥有的一切，尤其是他年轻的妻子米琪（艾拉·麦克弗森 Elle Macpherson 饰）都让他感到十分眼红，但是，罗伯特不知道的是，敏感又细心的查尔斯早就开始怀疑起了他和米琪之间的清白。　　在一次工作中，众人乘坐的飞机发生了事故，一行人流落到了阿拉斯加的荒原之上。匮乏的资源，恶劣的天气，凶恶的野生动物，一切的一切都威胁着大家的性命，但最最可怕的，其实是每个人深藏在心底的黑暗面。
